I get it. After doing my own healing work and helping my clients through their healing journeys, the patterns of trauma and stuckness have become clear. Struggling with insecurities and fear are common reactions to trauma. But they are not the only way.

I am committed to supporting you without judgements or assumptions. Everything that I do is completely customized to your needs. I offer traditional in-person therapy, intensives, video or phone sessions. I and am trained in EMDR Therapy and CBT Therapy. I also have experience with inner-child work, substance abuse/12 step recovery, and somatic experiencing.
I have experience working with a variety of clients struggling with issues including trauma, anxiety and depression, and grief and loss. I have also worked with people dealing with infertility, self esteem issues, marriage issues, postpartum adjustment and various life adjustment issues.
Trauma is any experience of abuse including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, physical injury, health issues, or exposure to anything that has threatened your feeling of safety or sense of self. It is crucial to note that it is not necessary for traumatic experiences to be considered "Extreme" in order for them to negatively impact your life. Divorce, moving, loss and life changes are also traumatic for many people. Confronting your trauma therapeutically allows for your mind to process it correctly so that it will no longer impact your daily life.
Anxiety and Depression are extremely common mental health issues that are highly treatable with proper support. Depression symptoms include a lack of interest in activities that you once enjoyed, feeling discouraged, sad, hopeless, or helpless. Symptoms of anxiety may include panic attacks or psychosomatic reactions to stress such as stomach aches, head aches, or difficulty sleeping. Therapy will help you to develop coping skills and resources so that you can manage your mood rather than it controlling you.
While we often think of grief as the death of someone close to us, which is most definitely is, it is also losing a pet, a job, a marriage, a hope for a relationship that is lost, or a change in your sense of self due to an injury or shift in your life. Many of my clients express a desire to have someone to sit with them in their pain and help them maneuver following a significant loss. Therapy can help you process your grief, feel supported (especially when everyone else seems to have moved forward) and adjust to the changes in your life.
We tend to under-estimate the impact that change can have on our lives. Life adjustments include but are not limited to: moving, ending or beginning new relationships, beginning or graduating from college, career changes, marriage, divorce, infertility and parenthood. Even positive changes such as getting married, buying your first home, getting promoted or starting a family can lead to stress and feel overwhelming. Having therapeutic support during times of transition and change can help transform your perspective and enable you to feel more comfortable quicker.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a psychotherapy approach that has undergone extensive research and been proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is one of the top treatment recommendations from the American Psychiatric Association for healing trauma.
EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages find relief from many types of psychological stressors and symptoms. EMDR can also be used for working through complex grief. It can be done with or without me knowing details of your experience of trauma, so you are free to only share what feels comfortable for you. Many of my clients who don't remember specific details of their experiences or who don't want to talk about them in detail find this to be an especially helpful part of EMDR.
It is a process that is more than eye movement/brain stimulation alone, though this is often what it is primarily known for. This is a crucial part of course, but we will also focus on resourcing by building on your strengths, creating healthy coping skills that you will be able to call on as needed, and practicing healthy limit setting by sticking with a pace that is catered directly towards your needs. I would be happy to explain this in more detail to you during our work together, as you will be an active participant in your healing.
Talk therapy incorporates multiple therapeutic modalities all of which are completed through talking with one another in a traditional therapeutic manner. These modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), inner child work and mindfulness based techniques. CBT is the most widely used intervention for mental health issues including depression and anxiety. It focuses on developing coping strategies and challenging unhelpful patterns in thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes about life. DBT is is most utilized to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, but it is also helpful for treatment of PTSD and other mood disorders. DBT focuses on behavioral skills including mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and emotion regulation. Inner child work is a metaphorical exploration of your voice as a child and how what you have been through in the past impacts your current perception of life. We give your younger self a voice so that they can "grow up" through your nurturing and no longer negatively affect your life in the present. Mindfulness is a state of focusing attention on the present, involving acceptance without judgement. This includes meditation techniques, mind-body connection, and awareness work.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective therapeutic intervention that aims to improve mental health. CBT focuses on changing and challenging unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors, in order to help improve emotions and reactions to life experiences. It also helps to create personalized coping skills that target solving current problems. CBT was originally designed for the treatment of Depression, but it's use has been expanded to include treatment of a number of other issues, including Anxiety and Weight Loss/Management. CBT has been used to help clients increase happiness and life satisfaction as it focuses on solutions, encouraging patients to challenge distorted cognitions and change destructive patterns of behavior. When compared to the use of psychoactive medications, review studies have found CBT alone to be as effective for treating less severe forms of Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Eating Disorders, etc. CBT takes a more structured approach to the therapeutic process, where you and I will work together to create your goals, help you transform your thoughts and perspective in a positive way, and achieve a life you dream of.
I’m Marisa Hughes, a Licensed Psychotherapist and Coach who specializes in trauma. Many people say that I provide them the best of both worlds. I received my Masters in Social Work from New York University and am trained in EMDR, a highly effective modality for the treatment of trauma. My strong clinical training combined with my intuitive gifts of knowing when and how to dive deeper with my clients allows me to facilitate healing at a deeper level, get to the core issues with my clients, and ignite true and lasting shifts in their lives. Many people think of trauma as horrific life experiences such as physical and sexual abuse or combat. While trauma is those things, it is also emotional abuse, neglect, the death of a loved one or animal, financial loss, moving, divorce, career loss, bullying, feeling less than, etc. I help my clients identify and validate their painful experiences for what they are, so that they can break free of their past and finally move forward.
Through diving deeper, letting go of judgment, and rewriting your story, you can break free of your past, no matter how dark it may have been. Your past does not need to define you any longer.

"Marisa is an amazing couples and individual therapist. My boyfriend and I went to see her when we were having major issues in our relationship. We had been together for nearly three years; living together, when he told me he needed space, and he moved out.
We tried other therapists, time apart and attempt to restart our relationship on our own, but we were getting nowhere. We both wanted to save our relationship; but we were really struggling.
