Helping You Get Unstuck, So You Can Propel Forward

Does it feel like your life is ruled by fear and insecurity?

Are you sick and tired of feeling stuck or held back by past painful life experiences?

Have you ever felt like you don't have control over your own life or circumstances?

Or maybe you are sick of feeling stuck in a vicious repeat cycle of unhealthy relationships (intimate, friendship, career, or otherwise) because deep down, you don’t believe that you deserve better?

I get it. After doing my own healing work and helping my clients through their healing journeys, the patterns of trauma and stuckness have become clear. Struggling with insecurities and fear are common reactions to trauma. But they are not the only way.

You can move forward and break free from your past and finally enjoy your life.

Who I Help

Who I Help

I would love to help you...

I have experience working with a variety of clients struggling with issues including trauma, anxiety and depression, and grief and loss. I have also worked with people dealing with infertility, self esteem issues, marriage issues, postpartum adjustment and various life adjustment issues

Trauma is any experience of abuse including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, physical injury, health issues, or exposure to anything that has threatened your feeling of safety or sense of self. It is crucial to note that it is not necessary for traumatic experiences to be considered "Extreme" in order for them to negatively impact your life. Divorce, moving, loss and life changes are also traumatic for many people.  Confronting your trauma therapeutically allows for your mind to process it correctly so that it will no longer impact your daily life.

Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and Depression are extremely common mental health issues that are highly treatable with proper support. Depression symptoms include a lack of interest in activities that you once enjoyed, feeling discouraged, sad, hopeless, or helpless. Symptoms of anxiety may include panic attacks or psychosomatic reactions to stress such as stomach aches, head aches, or difficulty sleeping. Therapy will help you to develop coping skills and resources so that you can manage your mood rather than it controlling you.

Grief and Bereavement

While we often think of grief as the death of someone close to us, which is most definitely is, it is also losing a pet, a job, a marriage, a hope for a relationship that is lost, or a change in your sense of self due to an injury or shift in your life. Many of my clients express a desire to have someone to sit with them in their pain and help them maneuver following a significant loss. Therapy can help you process your grief, feel supported (especially when everyone else seems to have moved forward) and adjust to the changes in your life.

Life Adjustments

We tend to under-estimate the impact that change can have on our lives. Life adjustments include but are not limited to: moving, ending or beginning new relationships, beginning or graduating from collegecareer changes, marriage, divorce, infertility and parenthood. Even positive changes such as getting married, buying your first home, getting promoted or starting a family can lead to stress and feel overwhelming. Having therapeutic support during times of transition and change can help transform your perspective and enable you to feel more comfortable quicker.

How I Can Help You

How I Can Help You

I am committed to supporting you without judgement or assumptions...

Everything that I do is completely customized to your needs.

Regardless of what you have been through, moving forward and getting unstuck is possible. Whether you are looking for EMDR, CBT, Traditional Psychotherapy, or a combination of approaches, I am committed to helping you propel forward.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a psychotherapy approach that has undergone extensive research and been proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is one of the top treatment recommendations from the American Psychiatric Association for healing trauma.

EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages find relief from many types of psychological stressors and symptoms. EMDR can also be used for working through complex grief. It can be done with or without me knowing details of your experience of trauma, so you are free to only share what feels comfortable for you. Many of my clients who don't remember specific details of their experiences or who don't want to talk about them in detail find this to be an especially helpful part of EMDR.

It is a process that is more than eye movement/brain stimulation alone, though this is often what it is primarily known for. This is a crucial part of course, but we will also focus on resourcing by building on your strengths, creating healthy coping skills that you will be able to call on as needed, and practicing healthy limit setting by sticking with a pace that is catered directly towards your needs. I would be happy to explain this in more detail to you during our work together, as you will be an active participant in your healing.

Watch the video below for more information on what you can expect from EMDR.

Talk Therapy

Talk therapy incorporates multiple therapeutic modalities all of which are completed through talking with one another in a traditional therapeutic manner. These modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), inner child work and mindfulness based techniques. CBT is the most widely used intervention for mental health issues including depression and anxiety. It focuses on developing coping strategies and challenging unhelpful patterns in thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes about life. DBT is is most utilized to treat Borderline Personality Disorder, but it is also helpful for treatment of PTSD and other mood disorders. DBT focuses on behavioral skills including mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and emotion regulation. Inner child work is a metaphorical exploration of your voice as a child and how what you have been through in the past impacts your current perception of life. We give your younger self a voice so that they can "grow up" through your nurturing and no longer negatively affect your life in the present. Mindfulness is a state of focusing attention on the present, involving acceptance without judgement. This includes meditation techniques, mind-body connection, and awareness work.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective therapeutic intervention that aims to improve mental health. CBT focuses on changing and challenging unhelpful thoughts, beliefsattitudes and behaviors, in order to help improve emotions and reactions to life experiences. It also helps to create personalized coping skills that target solving current problems. CBT was originally designed for the treatment of Depression, but it's use has been expanded to include treatment of a number of other issues, including Anxiety and Weight Loss/Management. CBT has been used to help clients increase happiness and life satisfaction as it focuses on solutions, encouraging patients to challenge distorted cognitions and change destructive patterns of behavior. When compared to the use of psychoactive medications, review studies have found CBT alone to be as effective for treating less severe forms of Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Eating Disorders, etc. CBT takes a more structured approach to the therapeutic process, where you and I will work together to create your goals, help you transform your thoughts and perspective in a positive way, and achieve a life you dream of.

About Me

About Me

I’m Marisa Hughes, a Licensed Psychotherapist and Coach who specializes in trauma. Many people say that I provide them the best of both worlds. I received my Masters in Social Work from New York University and am trained in EMDR, a highly effective modality for the treatment of trauma. My strong clinical training combined with my intuitive gifts of knowing when and how to dive deeper with my clients allows me to facilitate healing at a deeper level, get to the core issues with my clients, and ignite true and lasting shifts in their lives. It is my passion to help people get unstuck and remove barriers so that they can be the best version of themselves.

What is trauma?

Many people think of trauma as horrific life experiences such as physical and sexual abuse or combat. While trauma is those things, it is also emotional abuse, neglect, the death of a loved one or animal, financial loss, moving, divorce, career loss, bullying, feeling less than, etc. I help my clients identify and validate their painful experiences for what they are, so that they can break free of their past and finally move forward.

Through diving deeper, letting go of judgment, and rewriting your story, you can break free of your past, no matter how dark it may have been. Your past does not need to define you any longer.

Let’s work together so I can help you move forward in your life. You are only as stuck as you choose to be.

-Grief Support-

"What Marisa does for the soul is something incredible. It is truly a gift to have the support, guidance and care that she offers. I had been so afraid of therapy and doing the work before I met Marisa. But as I came into counseling Marisa created a safe, nonjudgmental environment that was amazing to experience and do real work in. As I continue to work with Marisa, I am so grateful for the many diverse qualities she offers that continue to help me on my path. For the first time in a long time, she has helped me see a light that I did not even know existed." -Kim

-Guilt and Shame-

"Before I worked with Marisa my life was consumed with negative feelings that I was too scared to feel. I remember my life beforehand. I was full of guilt and shame. Not just stemming from my substance abuse but from my traumatic past. And now? I'm not the same woman that I was. I have a different outlook, I have the ability to find joy in my imperfect life. I can laugh even when things aren't going well for me. I can step back and think my decisions through. I learned that I'm worth something, and that I have an entire lifetime ahead of me. I have learned to feel.
Marisa was not the first therapist I've seen. But, unlike others in the past, we were able to create this incredibly unique relationship. It was the only relationship I have ever had that was completely about me and that was how it's supposed to be. For the first time in my life, I was completely raw, honest and real with another human being. Marisa was the first person I was able to be real with. Miraculously, now I can deal with whatever life is throwing at me as it comes because of the work we have done." -Emma

-Personal Growth-

"Marisa is an unbelievable therapist! In just 3 and 1/2 months of working with her, I have gained such personal growth. She has taught me so much - how to value myself, be accountable and give myself credit for what I have done! This boosted my self worth and confidence which was shattered before I walked into her office. From our very first phone conversation I felt comfortable right away with her. G-d sent her to me! She has great empathy for her clients. And she always taught me to think for myself, play the tape through and trust my gut. She reinstilled my faith in myself. I feel so much stronger as a result of our work together and I'm so grateful! Thank you so much Marisa." -Robyn

"I originally went online back in June 2016 to locate a licensed psychotherapist--either an individual who is licensed in social work or a clinical psychologist. I had been soldiering through pain on my own, stuffing it down and not dealing with it properly. I located Marisa's website with key words I had used. I remember reading " Helping you to get unstuck" and "getting you out of pain." I said to myself, "Sounds great" and called Marisa and spoke with her on the phone.

We have been doing amazing work together ever since. Marisa Hughes is a very caring, compassionate, non-judgmental therapist who will meet anyone "where they are." She is flexible and will do sessions on the phone if need be. She has helped me to reach way down inside with journaling. We have initiated EMDR which is amazing. She is also in the process of learning new techniques and modalities which are cutting edge.

I am so grateful to Marisa for teaching me not to be judgmental of negative feelings and emotions I have and give myself permission to feel. That has been such a gift. I am looking forward to our work together in 2017!" - Sunny

-Depression, Grief, and Substance Abuse-

"I had the absolute pleasure of working with Marisa, I really can't even begin to tell you how grateful myself and my family are for her! I suffer from substance abuse, depression, grieving issues, and some other stuff. I really consider Marisa an angel in my eyes, she helped me get my good life back that I had before my substance abuse. I now have over 15 months sober, which I was never able to say before. Marisa really gets deep into all the underlining issues that I had and helped me figure out ways I can handle my issues rather than keeping them and let them build up and to cope with them the way I should. Her dedication and how much she cares made it even better to work with her! I would definitely recommend her to anyone I know that needs help!" -Kendra

-Trauma from Abuse-

"I would highly recommend Marisa. I honestly can say she has changed my life so much. I have suffered from abuse and trauma and so much more. She has made me realize so many things I didn't realize before she has helped me become a stronger woman and changed my world! Love her!!! The best!" -Kelly

-Couples Counseling-

"Marisa is an amazing couples and individual therapist. My boyfriend and I went to see her when we were having major issues in our relationship. We had been together for nearly three years; living together, when he told me he needed space, and he moved out.

We tried other therapists, time apart and attempt to restart our relationship on our own, but we were getting nowhere. We both wanted to save our relationship; but we were really struggling. After the New Year, we reached a breaking point. We decided to see one more couples therapist in an effort to save our relationship. We are so lucky we found Marisa, as she did just that; she saved our relationship.

We met with Marisa as a couple and I met with her individually in an effort to really dig deep and try to repair the damage that had been caused over the last few years. Marisa gave us great advice and really took the time to understand us as a couple and as individuals. She assessed our needs, and gave us extremely effective tasks to complete outside of therapy designed to strengthen our relationship and meet our goals.

After a few months of therapy with Marisa, my boyfriend proposed and we got engaged! We are now moving back in together with a much better understanding of each other and a stronger foundation to have a long lasting relationship.

It was a very difficult process going through a separation; but Marisa made it much easier and gave us the tools we needed to make our relationship work. If it wasn’t for her, I do not know if we would be together right now. I can’t thank her enough for her help. I think it would be extremely helpful to see Marisa from time to time to keep our relationship strong and healthy. Long term relationships take work, and Marisa understands this. I am so grateful for her guidance and support." - Lauren & Brian

-Intuitive Reading-

"I don’t even know how to put into words how amazing Marisa is. Her approach and level of empathy for her clients is something that is unparalleled to others. Marisa understood my resistance to opening up the unknown world for me and had such a soft and caring approach. She made me feel comfortable in one of my most uncomfortable experiences. Aside from her demeanor, Marisa has an amazing talent to connect with souls who have left human earth and she understands the magnitude of her abilities.
Marisa changed my life forever and I now hold a very special place in my heart for her. She is one of the most amazing people I have ever come across in my life & whomever she crosses paths with is touched forever.  I highly recommend Marisa for whatever your needs may be! - Shana T
